Shadowbanning by the Algorithm
Meta's policies state that content focused on health rather than sexual pleasure or enhancement is allowed, including sexual and reproductive health information. However, algorithmic moderation often contradicts these guidelines. Much of women's health content, while still technically active, is downranked, hidden from followers, or excluded from search results.
For example, a video (left) by Dr Sarah Welsh, a gynaecologist and sexual health expert, offering advice on how to handle a condom stuck in the vagina was flagged with a warning: "Your post may violate our policies on sexual content or nudity." In contrast, many male-focused advertisements (right) that centre purely on sexual pleasure pass moderation easily and achieve high visibility and engagement.
